Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. and Pick-N-Pull Auto Dismantlers, LLC Settle For $9,500
In July 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. and Pick-N-Pull Auto Dismantlers, LLC (Schnitzer)of Oakland, California, in the amount of $9,500 for the company’s violation of air quality regulations.
An investigation by CARB staff revealed that Schnitzer failed to maintain records for vehicles annually tested for excessive smoke emissions; and to comply with the reporting requirements and recordkeeping requirements of theIn-Use Off-Road Diesel-Fueled Fleet Regulation(Off-Road Regulation). CARB documented violations as they related to the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP) (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 13, §§ 2190 et seq.) and the Off-Road Regulation (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 13, § 2449 et seq.)
Schnitzer fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter. To settle the case, Schnitzer agreed to the $9,500 penalty and to enroll in the California Council on Diesel Education Technology’s (CCDET) CCDET I Smoke Test Training course, or the CARB Online Smoke Test Training course. Schnitzer also agreed to submit records of PSIP tests for their fleet in 2022 and 2023, and to comply with the PSIP, Off-Road Regulation, and all other CARB regulations going forward.
The penalty will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
