On-Road Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle Labeling Guidance

All certified engines and vehicles must be labeled. In general, labels should be: easily legible, contain appropriate compliance language, endure full useful life and placed in a location that is readily visible.

These labels, at a glance, provide valuable information regarding the engine and vehicle such as:

• Manufacturer's Name and trademark
• Date of Manufacturing 
• Family Name 
• Capacity/Displacement
• Emission Control Information and Identifiers
• Regulation Compliance Identification

At the time of certification, the engine manufacturer or vehicle manufacturer must submit a label schematic. If this is the manufacturer's first time certifying or the label material is changing, then at least three samples of the labels must be mailed to the certification engineer for tamper resistance and durability testing.
