Background
The agricultural sector is a key component of California’s economy and job market, and relies on primarily diesel equipment such as tractors, combines, harvesters, and more. This diesel equipment, particularly the older units, contribute to air quality issues in California, especially in the San Joaquin Valley. The new emissions inventory is an update to the population, activity, emission rates, and resulting emissions from agricultural equipment in the state.
The updated inventory was developed using data from a recent agricultural equipment survey conducted in 2019, updated USDA acreage data, satellite data on farm acres per county, and a few more sources. The updated inventory also captures equipment replaced through incentive programs that have helped farmers replace thousands of agricultural tractors and other equipment to cleaner, newer engines since 2009.
This public webinar along with the release of the draft document are intended to allow public comment and review of the data sources and methodology prior to a final release of the inventory in August 2021. If you have questions about the meeting purpose, scope and logistics, please contact Julie Schiffman.
