Long Beach Generation LLC Settles For $91,500
In August 2021, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Long Beach Generation LLC (Long Beach) in the amount of $91,500 for violation of the Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (SF6 GIS Regulation) as codified in California Code of Regulations (CCR), title 17, section 95350 et seq. (17 CCR §§ 95350-95359).
Long Beach operates a power generating station that uses natural gas. CARB investigative staff discovered that Long Beach retired a circuit breaker in December 2017 which resulted in an exceedance of their allowable emission rate of 4 percent. Long Beach was in violation of 17 CCR § 95352 and subject to penalties of 17 CCR § 95358.
Long Beach agreed to pay a total of $91,500 in civil penalties for 183 days, with a per unit penalty of $500. Of the total settlement amount, $46,500 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, and $45,000 will fund a Supplemental Environmental Project for “California Clean Air Day."
Long Beach fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter.
