Oil and Natural Gas Production, Processing, and Storage
The Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards for Crude Oil and Natural Gas Facilities is designed to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas production, processing, storage, and transmission compressor stations, which account for four percent of methane emissions in California. Regulated entities are required to take actions to limit intentional and unintentional emissions from equipment and operations.

Amendments to the Oil and Gas Methane Regulation
On June 22, 2023, the CARB Board adopted amendments to the Oil and Gas Methane Regulation, which will go into effect on April 1, 2024. These amendments better align the regulation with US EPA requirements, add a provision requiring repair of emission sources following notification of remotely-detected leaks, and make improvements based on implementation experience.
